Job Summary
This position starts Fall Semester/August 2023 - Note: Please read

Paradise Valley Community College (PVCC) is seeking a Counselor who
Instructs students from diverse backgrounds and/or cultures in a
full range of college success, CAP (Counseling and Applied
Psychological Science), and first-year experience classes (two-four
per semester) and in accordance with the college's
learning-centered philosophy. Uses multiple methods of instruction,
assessment results, and appropriate technologies to engage students
in learning, enhance teaching, and promote student success.
Provides individual and group educational, career, personal/social,
and crisis counseling. Provides professional counseling to
individual students in the areas of educational planning, career
development, personal growth and inventory
administration/interpretation. Demonstrates a commitment to service
excellence, innovation, assessment, student success, integrity, and
diversity in the performance of job duties. Focuses on cultural
diversity and special populations (e.g., returning adults,
Veterans, first-generation). The instructor may teach in both
traditional and non-traditional settings such as Learning
Communities, short-term courses and accelerated programs as well as
hybrid and/or online courses. Builds relationships with high school
and university institutions in support of transfer pathways.
Facilitates activities outside the classroom for students (e.g.,
undergraduate student research, clubs, experiences for students in
business/industry, etc.). May teach at the PVCC at Black Mountain
site, as well as at the Union Hills site. May teach evening and
weekend, as well as day, classes.
In this role, Residential Faculty (RFP) will be required to
complete an Individual Development Plan (IDP) during their first
five (5) years to account for their teaching, service, and
professional development in order to receive appointive status.
Essential Functions
Develops instructional materials and curriculum; develops written
syllabi/course outlines and course materials; assesses and
evaluates knowledge of subject matter taught and monitors students'
scholastic records; prepares and grades examinations and other
learning activities; hires, supervises, and evaluates adjunct
faculty; participates in division and college assessment and
program review processes; uses assessment and evaluation results to
improve instruction and student learning.
Provides individual and group educational, career, personal/social,
and crisis counseling; provides professional counseling to
individual students in the areas of educational planning, career
development, personal growth and inventory
administration/interpretation; maintains office hours to assist,
tutor, and advise students to promote learning, citizenship and
personal development; develops and cultivates relationships with
high school and university institutions to develop and promote
transfer pathways for students. Provides classes and counseling for
special populations (e.g., Veterans, Re-entry, LGBTQ)
Remains current with new trends and developments in the field
through attendance at conferences, courses, seminars, workshops;
develops and enhances knowledge of pedagogy related to the
Counseling discipline as well as pedagogy of adult learners and
underprepared students; participates in college and district
activities including department/division meetings, committees,
workshops and projects; contributes to academic life and mission of
the college; demonstrates intercultural competence and humility in
interactions with students, staff, and the community; maintains a
team approach in collaborating with faculty, staff, and
students.
Minimum Qualifications
A master's degree (or higher) in any of the following areas:
Master's degree or higher with an emphasis in counseling, from a
regionally accredited college or university to include at least
twenty-four (24) semester/ thirty-six (36) quarter hours including
the following:
1. Counseling Theories and Techniques (minimum 3 semester credit
hrs/5 quarter credit hrs)
2. Personality Theories or Human Development (minimum 3 semester
credit hrs/5 quarter credit hrs)
3. Testing Theories and Applications (minimum 3 semester credit
hrs/5 quarter credit hrs)
4. Group Counseling Theories and Techniques (minimum 3 semester
credit hrs/5 quarter credit hrs)
5. Career Counseling Theories and Resources (minimum 3 semester
credit hrs/5 quarter credit hrs)
6. Individual Assessment (minimum 3 semester credit hrs/5 quarter
credit hrs)
7. Practicum, supervised Practice, or Internship in Counseling.
Must have completed either a Practicum, Supervised Practice, or an
Internship in counseling (Applicants for counseling positions are
strongly encouraged to include course descriptions from the
university's catalog for the aforementioned seven courses). A
counselor may be hired if he/she has completed coursework in at
least five (5) of the first six (6) above areas and has the
required twenty-four (24) semester or 36 quarter hours of graduate
work. If the counselor is deficient in an area 1 through 6, the
deficiency shall be removed by completing the course within one
year of the date of hire. ** Number seven (7) must be completed
before the date of hire.
