Job Summary

Responsible for completing various processes to produce a high-quality finished contact lens. Experienced level position allowing the employee to become familiar with the advanced, quality critical stages of manufacturing contact lenses.

Essential Functions & Accountabilities

  • Once fully trained, the Production Operator 2 is required to perform any number of the processes required of the Production Operator 1.
  • Responsible for ensuring the cleanliness and organization of work areas using 6S procedures, as well as helping to train other operators on 6S.
  • Verify setup and calibration of machines and tools daily. May operate specialized equipment necessary for specific product groups.
  • When required, assists coordinator and/or technicians in managing workflow.
  • Demonstrates the capacity and desire to participate on and lead teams.
  • Understand and adhere to specified Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), written work instructions (WI) complying with FDA requirements and ISO standards.
  • Proficiency in use of machines and tools not limited to but including: 10x loupes, micrometers and pin gauges.
  • Adhere to strict tolerances, verifying each part conforms to associated work order.
  • Document processes accurately in accordance with Good Documentation Practices standards.
  • Maintain constant workflow keeping open communication with fellow Manufacturing Technicians and conducting all job duties in a professional manner.
  • Once trained, the Production Operator 2 will be responsible for performing any number of the following processes, dependent on product line and manufacturing process:
  • Material Handler- Prepares orders by placing the correct material in the appropriate amount per order into a tray for production. Train using specific training plan.
  • Lathe Cutting - Loads product onto a lathe to be automatically cut to order specifications. Train using specific training plan.
  • Lens Polishing - Loads parts onto a polishing machine and polishes. Train using specific training plan.
  • Laser Marking - Loads product onto a laser and places a laser mark in the appropriate location per order specifications. Train using specific training plan.
  • Blocking - Adhering base curve button to arbor. Train using specific training plan.
  • Lens Release/Deblocking - Releases the lens from the arbor. Train using specific training plan.
  • Lens Metrology - Uses various inspection equipment including center thickness gauge, edge thickness gauge and lensometer to determine if the parameters of a lens are within order specifications. Train using specific training plan
  • Edge polishing - Load lenses in polishing machine and polishes lens edges. Train using specific training plan.
  • Final Lens Inspection - Inspect and release lens per final release requirements. Train using specific training plan.
  • Labeling - Apply final labeling to vials. Train using specific training plan.

  • As business needs dictate, works extended hours to complete daily department goals or tasks to include mandatory overtime.
  • Performs other duties as needed/assigned.

Within established guidelines, performs various functions associated with the fabrication of contact lenses using appropriate machines and equipment. These operations are of a repetitive nature and require training within the scope of an approved Work Instruction and/or SOP. Works in a team manufacturing environment receiving direction from the Production Technicians, Operation Coordinators and/or Supervisors.


Knowledge Skills & Abilities

  • Exhibits good communication skills - verbal, written, and comprehension of the English language.
  • Excellent understanding of and compliance with all Work Instructions, SOP's, regulatory requirements, and GMP's.
  • Required to read and understand Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Follows appropriate safety and equipment maintenance procedures.
  • Basic computer systems knowledge.
  • Strong attention to detail.

Work Environment

  • Works scheduled holidays and overtime in order to maintain service levels for customers
  • Job position requires the ability to sit for up to 12hrs continuously.

  • Manufacturing experience required.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in Production Operator 1 role or similar experience.


  • High School diploma or GED required.
