Arizona Observation Unit is a 35-bed unit that centers care beyond
the patient's initial evaluation and treatment in the emergency
department/clinic. It is the unit's goal to determine inpatient
admission or discharge in a less than 24 hour stay by conducting
further testing, evaluation, and treatment.The OBS unit provides
comprehensive care, utilizing intensive case management and a
multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurse practitioners, and
other clinical professionals. Collaboration of care is guided by
specialized diagnostic protocols derived from clinical data and
best practice guidelines.Conditions that may require observation
status include chest pain, dehydration, vertigo, transient ischemic
attacks, congestive heart failure and others. To facilitate care,
the unit is conveniently located adjacent to radiology and has a
dedicated stress test room for our chest pain/cardiology patient
population. The goal is to provide the best patient care in a safe
and timely manner. The Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Physician
Assistant has advanced health assessment and decision-making
skills, prepared through a formal educational program that meets
criteria established by the profession. Acute Care Nurse
Practitioners or Physicians Assistants are certified by examination
of an approved certifying body.Level II Requirements:In addition to
the above requirements, must meet two to four of the following:
- Spends at least 50% of days based at the hospital (rounds,
service, or shift work).
- Performs specialized procedure(s).
- Provides evals and consults with indirect supervision at least
50% of days worked.
- Spends at least 10% of days as First Assist in surgery.
- Takes call assignments (Primary and/or ED).
- Provides Weekend/Holiday Service.Qualifications New Grads will
not be considered at this time.Acute Care Nurse Practitioner:
- Must be a graduate of an accredited university.
- Master of Science in Nursing required.
- Must be licensed or eligible to practice as an CNP in the State
of Arizona. Must have national certification.Physician Assistant:
- Must be a graduate of an accredited university.
- NCCPA certification required.
- Must be licensed/certified or eligible to practice as PA in the
State of Arizona.Additional qualifications
- Hospital inpatient or ED experience preferred.
- Excellent verbal, written and oral communication skills.
- Demonstrated leadership ability.
- Flexibility to adjust schedule to meet patient and staff
needs.
- Ability to manage time and stress effectively and adapt to
unpredictable situations within the patient care setting.
- Two to five years of clinical experience preferred.
- Primary care, acute care, and/or surgical experience
preferred.
- Strong computer skills in an Electronic Medical Record
preferred.License or certification
- Must be licensed or eligible to practice as an CNP in the State
of Arizona.
- Must be certified by the National Commission on the
Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
- Must have Arizona licensure as a Physician Assistant under the
supervision of a Mayo Clinic physician upon hire.
- Maintains prescribing and dispensing privileges in
Arizona.
- Must provide evidence of application for DEA certificate upon
hire, obtain DEA certificate within 90 days of hire, and maintain
certificate thereafter unless waived by department/division.Basic
Life Support certification is required upon hire and must be valid
for 90 days or greater from start date. Maintains Basic Life
Support (BLS) competency.Maintains ACLS and PALS certification as
required by specific department or division.Exemption status
